“ Refugees always wonder why we should have to leave our homes and leave everything behind.
We can never forget the painful times and what it felt like to lose loved ones through no fault of our own. We left looking for a dignified, safe, secure and better future for us and our children.
I was very lucky to be chosen to come to Canada. I dreamt that one day my brother and his family would live in Canada but I never thought this would come true.
When I heard that my brother and his family and my nephew and his family had been chosen to come to Canada as refugees, I was so happy for them because coming to Canada would end their suffering and give them the chance to start a good and dignified life and would open up opportunities for their kids.
But I was also happy for myself because I would have part of my family here with me. It felt unbelievable! I am so grateful to OCRA for their efforts to reunite me with my family and for giving me the opportunity to help them adjust to a new country, new culture and new language.
When my family and I fled Syria, I left behind 7 sisters and 3 brothers, along with their spouses and children. I have never met some of my nieces and nephews. My youngest brother was forced to flee to Jordan with his family because of the war in Syria. I have only seen pictures of some of his children. He and his family are suffering and their basic needs are not being met because of the economic and social conditions in Jordan.
I want nothing more than to be reunited with my youngest brother here in Canada. I do not want to see him and his family suffer any longer and I wan this children to have the opportunity to learn and grow here.”
