The minimum cost for private sponsorship is based on the benefits for government-assisted refugees under the Refugee Assistance Program (RAP). RAP benefits are, in turn, based on the social assistance benefits set by each province.
RAP rates also vary with family size and require:
- Start-up costs to be paid for furniture, household items, regular and winter clothing, staples, linens, utility set-up, school supplies and baby equipment when applicable;
- Monthly Support payments for rent and utilities, food and supplies, communications and transportation.

As of December 2022, the minimum cost for an individual who is settled in Ottawa is $16,600 and for a family of 2 parents and 4 minor children is $32,500.
